Pre-conference Session: BostonWP Beginner’s Workshop

Last year, as part of the schedule for WordCamp Boston 2010, we organized a beginners / newbies track of content in the am, to help get those new to WordPress as a platform up to speed. This year we haven’t planned a specific “101” or “beginners” track. Certainly many of our talks will be accessible to those new to the platform, but there isn’t really a newcomers orientation style set of sessions.

I’m very excited to announce, however, that Kurt Eng and James Coletti (organizers of the Boston WordPress meetup in addition to being part of organizing team for WordCamp) will be offering a Beginner’s Workshop the afternoon before WordCamp.

This workshop will be on Friday, July 22nd running from 1pm to 5pm held at Boston University. The cost for this workshop is $20. Here’s their description:

Curious about WordPress and how it can help you build and manage a better blog or website?

WordPress is a state-of-the-art web publishing platform, developed by hundreds of community volunteers and used by over 25 million people. Best of all, WordPress is free! With thousands of themes and plug-ins available on the web, anyone can launch a feature-rich website in minutes. First, you will learn the fundamentals of how WordPress works, how to get it up and running, and how to start publishing content immediately. Then we will explore the Administrator’s Dashboard, including how to organize your content and configure certain features & behaviors of your site. Finally, you will learn how to install themes and plug-ins to alter the appearance of your site and add additional functionality for improved social integration, search engine optimization, and backup/security. (Note: We will be working with the self-hosted version of WordPress at http://wordpress.org, not the hosted service at http://wordpress.com.

Not only that, but they’ve agreed to run this beginners workshop as a way to help fund WordCamp itself, donating all of the proceeds to the Camp!

If you’re new to the WordPress platform and looking to add a booster-pack of knowledge going into the weekend, please do check out the information and registration for BostonWP Beginner’s Workshop.

Thanks again to Kurt and James for their ongoing management of the Boston WordPress meetup, without which WordCamp Boston would never have been possible.

As we mentioned here at the beginning of June, we’ve lined up special conference rates for rooms at the Courtyard by Marriott Brookline and at the Holiday Inn Boston-Brookline, both of which are within a mile or mile and a half of the conference venue. We’ve also been able to offer a limited number of rooms dorm style, at reduced rates. (More information and discount codes for accommodations for WordCamp Boston 2011).

But you’ve got to book soon. Specifically for the dorms, if you haven’t been in touch with us at boston@wordcamp.org by the end of day today, you will have missed your chance.

The hotels have been quite flexible, but will ultimately sell out – Boston in July is a popular travel destination.

So, if you’re planning on staying in town, make your reservations now!

Improving Your WordPress Productivity

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the choices of themes and plugins? Spending too much of your time writing custom code, trying out the wrong plugins, or performing repetitious tasks? You don’t have to learn by trial and error. If you set your site up properly from the start, and follow the right guidelines, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and frustration.

This presentation is for beginner and intermediate users who are looking to improve their productivity in using and extending WordPress. If you feel like you’re always taking the long way when building a site, this presentation might be just what you’re looking for. I’ll cover some of the best practices for choosing themes and plugins, and show you how to use WordPress more efficiently. I’ve built dozens of WordPress websites, and I’m here to share some of the knowledge I’ve learned.

Welcome Gold Sponsor A Small Orange

We’re very excited this morning to announce hosting provider A Small Orange as a Gold Sponsor for WordCamp Boston 2011!

Here’s what Doug Hanna (the “Head Orange,” my new favorite title) had to say:

A Small Orange is pleased to be a sponsor of WordCamp Boston 2011. As a Linux hosting provider, we host a ton of WordPress sites, but we’re not just in the hosting business to make a profit, we’re also doing our best to make a difference.

That’s why we’re proud to support the WordPress community through our sponsorship of WordCamp Boston 2011. Without the strong support of talented developers and users like you, the world wouldn’t have access to powerful open source tools like WordPress. We admire and respect the collaboration and effort required to make projects like WordPress possible. In fact, our new website will be built on WordPress.

So, thanks for all the hard work you’ve poured into this project, and thanks for making WordPress what it is today.

Perhaps we should rename the Gold level to Orange?

Thanks for your support – everyone go check out their hosting and Advanced Services offerings.

Update on Accomodations

Finding an affordable place to stay in Boston in July can be challenging. Not that I blame the hordes of incoming tourists trying to visit our fair city in the warmer months, what with the boats in the harbor, the Freedom Trail, and the fights on Carson beach.

We’ve managed to find a few options (which you’ll find on our lodging page) that might make your trip to WordCamp Boston more affordable:

  • The Courtyard by Marriot, Brookline – rooms at $199/night plus tax
  • The Holiday Inn Boston – Brookline has rooms at $169/night plus tax
  • Rooms may be available in the Boston University Student Residences at $65/night

See housing options for WordCamp Boston for more details.

Growth Spark Supports WordCamp Boston

We’re happy to have WordCamp Boston 2010 sponsor Growth Spark back for another year.

Ross Beyeler, the founder, writes:

Personally I’ve been working with WordPress since the days of Duke but more professionally, Growth Spark has been developing WordPress-based websites since 2008. We’ve grown quite fond of *cough, obsessed with* WordPress and everything it can do. Sponsoring WordCamp Boston is our opportunity to show give back to a community that has given us so much.

We sponsored WordCamp Boston 2010 and had a blast with everyone who attended. We’re looking forward to a bigger crowd, bigger venue and bigger impact for this year’s event. Growth Spark will have a solid crew in attendance, so please don’t be shy to pull one of us aside and nerd out on all things WP!

That’s a big expectation to live up to – last year’s WCBOS wasn’t called #bestwordcampever for nothing – but we’re excited to try!

Thanks Ross and everyone at Growth Spark for supporting the WordPress community generally and specifically WordCamp Boston 2011.

Stickers!

What do the digital elite and the average five-year old have in common?

For one, a love of stickers.

As they did last year, John Fischer and the folks at Sticker Giant are once again coming through with some great custom stickers for WordCamp Boston 2011.

Here you can watch ’em rolling off the press:

Look for these on laptops of the best and brightest later this summer . . . .
